This last Thanksgiving was the coldest since before many of you tender readers were born (1892, to be exact). Since most Tenderloin buildings are really old, only have crappy single-pane windows that don’t seal well, and no wall insulation, most of us have been freezing our asses off at home when not spending time with relatives basking in proper heating systems outside of the city. At least the owners of our building don’t turn off the heat in the tenants’ apartments.

Unfortunately, that’s not the case in a lot of the SROs, so these signs have popped up around the neighborhood informing people in three languages about their heating rights. Namely, that according to the San Francisco Housing Code, heat should be provided from the hours of 5am to 11am and from 3pm to 10pm. Given that code violations consistently happen all time, I wonder if that was actually helpful for those without heating in their apartments.
