We were happy to see on KGO reports that five San Francisco young athletes from the Tenderloin qualified to the National Junior Olympics next month. Joseph Morrision, Timothy Duplessis, Christian Eik, Barbara Nguyen and Simon Xie will be heading to Des Moines, Iowa for the August 1-8 event. The group are members of the MacCanDo Tenderloin Youth Track Club, focusing on kids ages 5 to 16 primarily from the Tenderloin but training the athletes at the Kezar Stadium near Golden Gate Park -twice a week.

According to the founder and director of the club, track and field athlete Robert McDaniels, this year is the first time that more than one athlete from the Tenderloin has qualified to compete nationally, and it’s the first time in the club’s five years that numerous athletes have qualified for multiple events.
